Work to understand the problems with poor bathing water quality at Bridlington South Beach could also help experts understand some of the issues at Scarborough's South Bay.
The Environment Agency will be carrying out investigations in Bridlington over the summer including looking at the effects of local bird populations on water quality.
Claire Campbell from the agency, says there are a number of similarities between the two resorts.
The work to understand why Bridlington South Beach is experiencing poor bathing water quality ratings will be taking place this year.
The Environment Agency says it is working with East Yorkshire Council to carry out an investigation.
The agency says they will be looking at a number of potential factors including the effect of local bird populations and the number of visitors to the beach.
Claire Campbell is is one of the agency's Bathing Water Technical Specialists and says there do seem to be some localised factors at play.
In a report to North Yorkshire Council's Scarborough area committee earlier this month, the Environment Agency said that political and media pressure has led it to prioritise work at Bridlington South Bay this year.
