The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit has issued an urgent warning regarding a fraudulent telephone scam that has recently targeted individuals in the Humberside area.
In a recent incident, a victim received a call on their landline from a man claiming to be ‘Detective Morgan’ from the ‘Scarborough District’. The caller provided a collar number, ‘E655’, and informed the victim that someone had been arrested with their cloned bank card. The scammer then inquired about the victim's availability, suggesting a sinister motive behind the call.
Fortunately, the victim recognized the suspicious nature of the conversation and terminated the call before further engagement. Experts believe that had the victim continued the conversation, a second scammer, referred to as a “courier,” would have been dispatched to collect their bank cards.
Authorities have reported that the phone number used by the fraudster has been linked to multiple contacts with other individuals across both the Humberside and North Yorkshire areas between September 17 and September 23. This pattern indicates a potentially widespread scam targeting unsuspecting residents.
The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit emphasizes the importance of vigilance in such situations. They advise anyone receiving a call from someone claiming to be a police officer with similar details to refrain from engaging and to report the call to local police via online channels or by calling 101. In cases where individuals feel threatened or if the caller visits their home, they are urged to call 999 immediately.
As this investigation continues, local residents are encouraged to remain alert and to share this warning with friends and family to help prevent further victimis.
