Two Yorkshire Ambulance Service colleagues are taking on a twenty-mile coastal walk from Scarborough to Bridlington to raise funds for their service's charity.
Colleagues from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service are gearing up for a demanding twenty-mile coastal walk from Scarborough to Bridlington to raise money for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity, as part of the organisation's twentieth-anniversary celebrations.
Nick Towers and Rachel Henderson, who are based in Wakefield, work together as Ambulance Care Assistants within the non-emergency Patient Transport Service. In their daily roles, they are responsible for assisting eligible patients who are unable to travel to their healthcare appointments by any other means due to specific medical conditions.
Next Thursday, 16 July, the duo will step away from their usual duties to take on the coastal trek. The route will see them starting at Scarborough North Bay and following the seafront until they reach the A165, before taking the main road all the way down the coast to Bridlington Harbour.
The crew has been working together for more than three years, and this upcoming walk is not their first major fundraising effort for the charity.
Last year, Nick, who serves as a Charity Champion, alongside his colleagues including Rachel, managed to raise over £1,500 for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity. They achieved this impressive total through a gruelling ten-mile sponsored walk from Pinderfields Hospital to Pontefract Hospital, which they completed while pushing an eighty-kilogram stretcher and a forty-kilogram mannequin.
Nick said:
"We always look forward to a challenge, but being able to raise money for the charity makes it more rewarding, and maybe there will be an ice cream or two along the way."
Rachel added:
"I am looking forward to being part of the challenge and supporting Nick along the way. I enjoy walking and I completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks for the YAS Charity three years ago."
Alongside his primary role, Nick is also a Community Engagement Volunteer. In this capacity, he has delivered vital training in CPR and basic life support to more than four hundred people.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity funds the essential equipment and materials required for this lifesaving training, providing support that goes above and beyond standard NHS-funded work. This financial support includes assisting with the roll-out of more community defibrillators across the region.
Carey Taylor, Head of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity, said:
"We are very grateful to Nick and Rachel for taking on this 20-mile walking challenge to celebrate 20 years of the YAS Charity. We are a small charity, but we have big ambitions for our birthday year and lots of fundraising activities planned which we urge members of the public to get involved in. If you would like to become a Charity Champion like Nick and help the YAS Charity achieve even more than we would love to hear from you."
According to the charity, it remains committed to helping save more lives across the region by enabling everyone to respond in a medical emergency.
Furthermore, the organisation goes the extra mile for Yorkshire Ambulance Service staff and volunteers by supporting various initiatives that directly benefit their health and wellbeing. The charity notes that this support could range from providing a new bench in the sunshine at an ambulance station, to sponsoring kit for a staff sports club, or supporting an event hosted by staff networks.
Members of the public who wish to sponsor Nick and Rachel can do so by visiting their JustGiving page, while those interested in becoming a Charity Champion are encouraged to visit the charity's website or contact them via email.
