A64 Closed for the Second Weekend in a Row Between Scarborough and Malton

The A64 will be closed for the second weekend in a row this weekend.

Resurfacing will be taking place between Rillington and Scagglethorpe with the road fully closed from 6:30pm on Friday October 6th until 6am on Monday October 9th.

Once again a fully-signed diversion will be in place with drivers being asked to follow the signposted diversions rather than satnavs, to reduce the impact on rural communities.

The diversion route will take traffic through Pickering via the A170 and A169. Last weekend there were significant delays reported in the Snainton area due to temporary traffic lights on the route which were later removed.

National Highways say the dates have been selected to avoid the peak summer months and several public events taking place on the east coast in September. While the work has been scheduled to take advantage of favourable conditions, it is weather dependent and in the event of an adverse forecast, National Highways may have to reschedule the work.

National Highways Project Manager Simon Taylor said:

“The resurfacing work will be comprehensive. We plan to excavate areas at a deeper level to reach material under the road which has degraded over time.

By working this way, the finished road surface will have a longer lifespan which reduces the need for patching and reactive repairs in the future.

To get the job done safely and as quickly as possible, we’ve chosen to keep the duration of the works short. This will be over two full weekends rather than working section by section over a much longer period.

We’ve been in touch with residents to let them know of our plans and the measures taken to maintain access to their homes, as well as always ensuring access for emergency services.

We apologise in advance to people near our work area and on the diversion route who may experience increased noise levels, and we thank them in advance for their patience while this essential work is completed.”

A fully-signed diversion agreed in advance with the police and the local authority avoiding height, weight, and environmental restrictions, will be in place for A64 traffic. Drivers are also advised to follow the signposted diversions rather than satnavs, to reduce the impact on rural communities.

In it's advice to local residents and road users National Highways says:

"Our working area sits between the junction of A64/Low Moorgate Lane (Coach and Horses) extending west along the A64, towards the junction of Bull Piece Lane (Ham and Cheese Pub). This will be closed to all traffic. Local businesses will still be open and accessible on foot.

If you live within this area, please can we ask you to limit your vehicle movements and/or find alternative parking. Cones will be laid out to identify this section of the route.

Should you need to exit this area by vehicle over the weekend(s) please approach one of the onsite team and we will do our upmost to accommodate your request. Again, we are asking for your cooperation – please only request access if absolutely necessary (e.g., medical reasons and emergencies). You will be provided with a supervisor contact phone number; this information will be posted by hand to selected properties, before the work starts.

Please be aware that requests to access the work area will involve waiting times as you will need to be escorted – the safety of residents and our workforce is our first priority. There will also be periods when access is not available due to the depth of excavation or during curing times; note that unauthorised vehicle access to this work area could cause damage to vehicles and extend our programme timescales should we need to reinstate surfacing.

We apologise in advance for this inconvenience however, working this way means we get the job done over two weekends and not over an extended period which means less disruption overall.

We appreciate your cooperation with this matter and thank you in advance for your patience with the onsite team as they manage both the work programme and safe access for residents."

Highways England say the closure itself will extend beyond the work area, both east and west, to prevent traffic from reaching the closure with no alternative through routes they say:

"We will close the A64 between Malton Road at West Knapton to Old Malton Roundabout.

Residents living between West Knapton and the junction of the A64 and Low Moorgate Lane (Coach and Horses) will have full vehicle access to properties in the closure up to the junction. This part of the closure will be signed for local access only however there will be no access beyond the junction during the works.

Residents who live on Low Moorgate Lane and connecting roads will have their access maintained but should be aware that overnight (10pm to 6am) access will be severely restricted whilst we carry out work through the crossroads in the centre of the village. Residents need to allow additional waiting time to ensure that they can safely be escorted past the work or preferably avoid traveling through the junction (please avoid journeys or park vehicles on the other side of the closure.)

Residents of Wintringham and Place Newton can access part of the A64 via Sandy Lane. This part of the A64 will be under closure and signed for local access only; there will be no access west beyond the junction of the A64 and Low Moorgate Lane (Coach and Horses).

Residents living off Collinsons Lane will have no access to the A64 – you will need to exit/enter via Thorpe Bassett using the local road network to reach your destination.

Residents and businesses located between Old Malton Roundabout (Brambling Fields, Scagglethorpe) and Bull Piece Lane will have full vehicle access to properties up to our work area. This will be signed at Old Malton Roundabout for local access only with businesses open as usual."
