Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume has welcomed a hospital green funding award of £8.6 million for Scarborough Hospital.
The MP has welcomed news that Scarborough Hospital is benefiting from a significant government-funded clean power upgrade which will deliver savings for the taxpayer by cutting energy bills.
More than £80m has been awarded across the Yorkshire and Humber region as part of a drive to improve the efficiency of public buildings across Britain and ensure more can be spent on delivering the services people need.
Scarborough Hospital will receive £8.6m from the government to replace the existing fossil fuel boiler with an air source heat pump. The funding will also pay for energy efficiency measures and upgrades to the pipework and the building energy management systems.
Ms Hume said:
“Labour’s clean power mission is the only way to take back control of our energy system and protect billpayers. I’m delighted that Scarborough Hospital is benefiting from this award of nearly £9 million. I will continue to work hard in Westminster to deliver investment into the constituency I am proud to serve”.
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will deliver an estimated £650 million in savings for UK taxpayers every year on average over the next 12 years.
Chris Norman, Managing Director, York Teaching Hospitals Facilities Management, said:
“This investment marks an important step in modernising the heating infrastructure at Scarborough Hospital.
“Replacing the ageing, fossil fuel-based system with low-carbon air-source heat pump technology will not only improve energy efficiency but also contribute meaningfully to the Trust’s commitment to delivering on its Green Plan and the NHS’s wider net zero targets.
“We’re pleased to be delivering a project that supports both environmental sustainability and the long-term resilience of our estate.”
The government says that as well as unlocking economic growth and jobs, its clean power mission "allows Britain to seize back control of its energy system - which had been left exposed to volatile international fossil fuel markets - and protect billpayers".
Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Minister for Energy Consumers, said:
“We’re delivering a clean upgrade for communities – from schools to museums to galleries and swimming pools – helping to rebuild vital public services as part of the Plan for Change.
“This investment will see local communities benefit from our sprint to clean power, with warm public buildings run more affordably and taxpayer money spent on vital services.”
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith said:
"For too long, people have had to put up with leaking hospital roofs, crumbling classroom walls, and public buildings left to decay. Staff working in rundown facilities. Children learning in classrooms patched up year after year. Patients treated in spaces that are barely fit for purpose. It’s not good enough and people deserve so much better.
"That’s why I welcome the news that over £8 million is being invested in our hospitals in Scarborough, York and Harrogate, alongside millions more for schools - including in our region - as part of a Government programme to make public buildings fit for the future.
"Our NHS staff, our children, and their teachers deserve so much better than a decade of decline. This is just the first step - but we’re committed to rebuilding the modern, safe, and dignified public services our communities deserve.”
