Spending a penny in Whitby is set to cost 50 pence after the Town Council approved an increase in the fees it charges to use it's public conveniences.
Whitby Town Council manages the public toilets on New Quay Road, Pier Road, West Cliff, the Abbey Headland and in the Market Place. It also runs the toilets in Ruswarp.
The Council took over the running of the local public toilets from the Borough council several years ago. The town council has to fund the operation of the facilities itself and introduced a charge to cover the costs of cleaning and maintaining the loos.
Over the last year the council says it has seen a fall in the revenue generated by the toilets at the same time as it is facing increased costs. The Council says it is facing water rates for the toilets increasing from £15,000 to £43,000, and is projecting income from the facilities will drop from £55,000 to £15,000.
Councillor Asa Jones thinks it's right to increase the charges from 40p to 50p in order to take pressure off council tax payers.
Councillor Sandra Turner reluctantly backed the increase but thinks the long term future of the toilets needs looking at.
Not everyone was in favour of increasing the charges. Councillor Rob Barnett thinks the increased fees will impact on visitors to the town.
But Councillor Heather Coughlan was among those backing the increase, saying that the toilets are mainly used by visitors.
The increase to 50p was backed by Town Councillors as part of their budget approval process for the coming year.
