£30m Needed to Upgrade North Yorkshire Fire Stations

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says it may need to borrow £30m over the next few years to modernise it's fire stations.

The service is proposing a number of changes to it's services to reallocate money to areas where it is most needed.

Michael Porter is Chief Finance Officer at the fire commissioners office, he says they will still need to borrow extra cash to carry out works on buildings.

Up to £30m will be needed to upgrade the county's fire stations over the next six years.

Finance chiefs say the service will need to borrow the money to make the improvements.

Michael Porter says the investment is needed after a period of austerity.

The borrowing would be separate from the proposed changes to the fire service in North Yorkshire which are being designed to enable reinvestment in the service rather than to cut costs.

A public consultation has been launched on those proposals which will see the service refocus it's efforts on improving the availability of on-call fire engines in rural areas, and increasing prevention and protection work across the county.
