Big Ideas By The Sea has teamed up with the Historic Towns Trust to raise funds for highly detailed historic maps showcasing the rich heritage of Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast.
John Oxley and Kane Cunningham, representing the organisation Big Ideas By The Sea, are currently developing a series of old maps designed to showcase the extensive history of Scarborough and the entire Yorkshire Coast.
The ambitious heritage project aims to create a detailed cartographic record of the region, highlighting the locations of historical buildings and significant landmarks that have shaped the local area over the centuries.
To ensure the highest quality and accuracy, the pair have joined forces with the Historic Towns Trust, an organisation known for its expertise in producing comprehensive historical maps and gazetteers.
The initiative is currently in its fundraising phase, with the organisers actively seeking financial contributions from the public and interested parties to bring the project to fruition.
John detailed the nature of their partnership and their current focus on securing financial backing:
"We're working with the Historic Towns Trust. Historic Towns Trust produce these incredible historic maps of places telling you where all the old buildings were, you know, which are the important buildings, gives you a highly detailed map and gazetteer. And uh we're raising funds for that. We're in full on arm twisting mode this year."
The planned maps are intended to be more than just geographical records; they are designed to be a celebration of the Yorkshire Coast's rich heritage and enduring appeal.
The organisers remain highly optimistic about reaching their financial targets, noting that there has already been significant interest from the community.
They believe that the passion people have for the region's history, combined with its natural assets such as the sea, the Wolds, and the moors, will drive the success of the fundraising campaign.
Kane and John expressed their confidence in the project's funding and shared their enthusiasm for the local area, they're confident they can raise the necessary funds:
"Yeah hopefully, and I think we'll get that money, had a lot of interest today from people and we're just uh we're doing the Bob Geldof thing, give us your money, we'll make it happen. And it always works. Celebrating our history, and the map is all about that. It's an incredible place, and there's some amazing people around here and they're all about saying Scarborough is this amazing place. It's got amazing heritage, it's got amazing places to eat, it's got amazing places to stay, loads of things to do, we've got the sea, we've got the Wolds, we've got the moors."
