The Rotary Club of Scarborough brought up its century this week with Mayor of the Borough, Councillor Eric Broadbent, the guest of honour.
On the 25th October 1921, the Rotary Club of Scarborough was formed, at exactly 100 years to the day it celebrated with a Centenary Gala Dinner at its home of Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club.
Approximately 150 Rotarians, Friends and Guests gathered together to enjoy the evening. They were treated to some excellent hospitality and were addressed by The Mayor of The Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Broadbent accompanied by the Mayoress, his wife Lynne.
The Mayor congratulated The Club on reaching its milestone and commended the members past and present on the service they provide through their worthwhile endeavours and fund raising.
The gathering was entertained by the guest speaker, Harry Gration MBA, who regaled the audience with many humorous anecdotes of his life and work. As well as a celebration of 100 years, the event was part of The Club’s 'ROTARY100’ initiative, aimed at raising a target sum of £100,000 for the locally based projects at the YMCA, Scarborough, Scarborough NHS Hospital and St.Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough. Each of the organisations was represented at the dinner.
Nigel Wood, The President of the Rotary Club of Scarborough, said:
“The Gala Dinner was a special night for The Club and thanked everyone who contributed to and attended the event and who made it so memorable. The money we are trying to raise is ambitious but each of the three projects will make such a difference to the various elements of our Scarborough community.”
