Three killed in Philippines school shooting

Three people are dead and seven more injured after a school shooting in the Philippines.

Two suspects, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested after the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban, a city on the island of Leyte.

Tacloban police chief Noelito Getigan told reporters the suspects allegedly used a 38-calibre and 9mm firearm in the shooting, which took place at around 9am local time. Officers recovered 40 empty shells from the crime scene.

One of the suspects, a minor and Grade 9 student, was arrested shortly after the incident while the other later surrendered to authorities, Getigan added.

"Initially, the motive of the crime is a grudge related to school bullying," a police spokesperson told reporters.

Both suspects have been turned to social welfare authorities following the shooting, which took place weeks after schools in the country reopened following a break.

Officers said victims were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment with additional personnel deployed at the school.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said he was saddened by shooting and ordered an investigation.

Authorities had been directed to ensure safety and security in public places, especially in schools, the president's statement said.

The incident is rare in the Philippines, which has strict gun ownership laws.

But there was another incident in July 2022, when a gunman opened fire at a graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University law school, killing three, including former Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay.
