Police name teenage spectator killed after crash at Donegal International Rally

A teenager killed during a rally crash in Ireland has been named as Tadhg Callaghan Carter.

The Donegal International Rally on Saturday was cancelled after Mr Carter, 15, was killed and two others injured on the Gartan stage of the event.

Irish police, the Gardai, said they and other emergency services were alerted after a number of onlookers were injured "in an incident involving a participating car" at Trentagh, near Kilmacrennan.

Mr Carter was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

Two other spectators are receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

It is understood the crash happened when a competing car left the road at a left-hand bend.

Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motorclub said they had cancelled the rest of the event "as a mark of respect".

They said they were "deeply saddened" by the death and expressed "deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time".

Motorsport Ireland and Gardai said they had begun a "full investigation into the circumstances of the accident".

They also added they are aware of video footage of the accident circulating on social media, asking the public not to share it.

Organisers bill the three-day event as "one of the toughest rally challenges there is for drivers and teams" and claim it welcomes more than 70,000 spectators with 400,000 viewing it on TV and online.

Those taking part compete in 20 stages around the north-west coast of the county.
