New York fire kills six and injures nine - including firefighters and police officers

Six people have died and at least nine others were injured - including three firefighters and two police officers - during a house fire in New York.

Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries and later pronounced dead, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said.

The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning on Thursday at a two-storey house in Brooklyn, in the borough's Sunset Park neighbourhood.

Flames were "blowing out of every window" when firefighters arrived at the scene, Kevin Woods, the department's chief of fire operations said.

At a news conference, he said: "Upon arrival, we had fire on every floor. Fire blowing out every window, meeting us at the front door."

According to the city's fire department, three firefighters suffered minor injuries. More than 200 first responders were sent to the the scene.

The property was heavily, with the front heavily charred and windows destroyed.

Withing three hours the fire was brough under control, though the cause is still under investigation.

A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but the city's fire department said it was not clear whether it played any part in the blaze.

Four people were rescued by firefighters, including two who were trapped behind window bars in the home, Mr Woods added. No names have been released of those killed in the fire at this stage.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said it "was a devastating fire" at the news conference on Thursday.

"It will take a long time for this neighbourhood to mourn the neighbours they lost this morning and to recover from this immense grief," he said.

The nine people who were injured were expected to survive, including the three firefighters and two police officers who had minor injuries, the department said.

The fire also forced multiple residents to leave their homes, with eight immediate neighbours moved to hotels.
