Katie Zacharia has left her role as White House press secretary - just a week after being appointed to the job.
It comes after scrutiny over her claim to be a lawyer despite not passing the bar exam.
A senior White House official said on Friday she was out of her job.
Donald Trump earlier said she should reconsider her role.
The US president said Ms Zacharia had been treated "pretty nastily" by some sections of the media and he wants her to be "happy".
Mr Trump said he had told her she had a great life and family without having to be press secretary.
"I told Katie, in my opinion, she was treated very unfairly," he said, noting that Ms Zacharia has been "brutalised by the media".
During Mr Trump's first term in office, Anthony Scaramucci was White House communications director for just 10 days in 2017.
