Finlay Tarling: 'Fury' over death of teen British cyclist during Portugal race

The cyclists' union is "filled with anger" after the death of British rider Finlay Tarling during the Volta a Portugal race.

The 19-year-old, from Wales, was taking part in the eighth stage on Friday when he was struck by a non-race car that entered the road during the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe, local media reported.

Tarling was a time trial specialist who last year joined the NSN Development Team, which has since withdrawn from the remaining stages of the race.

The Cyclistes Professionnels Associes (CPA) has posted on social media: "We are speechless and filled with anger after the news of Finlay Tarling's death at the Tour of Portugal.

"It is not right that a young athlete's life should end this way, and we are furious that even today it is still not possible to prevent such serious accidents.

"We share in the grief of his family, friends, team, and everyone who knew Finlay. Rest in peace, young rider; we pray for you, and we will carry you in our hearts."

Riders gathered for a moment of silence before stage nine began in Paredes on Saturday.

French cyclist Alexis Guerin, who won the stage, also wore a black jersey in honour of Tarling.

NSN Cycling's president Adam Hansen has called for improved helmets to prevent similar incidents.

He told BBC Sport: "One thing we have to look at is helmets. They need a major upgrade.

"Bike helmets only need to meet standard testing like all helmets, EU standard CE EN 1078 is only rated for 19.5km/h and I do not believe this is enough for road racing."

Portugal's RTP broadcaster ⁠said Tarling was hit by a non-race car driving in the opposite direction.

Portuguese President Antonio Jose ⁠Seguro expressed his condolences, saying ​Tarling's death had "plunged the peloton, the tournament ​and the host nation into mourning".

Officials are now reportedly considering a tribute to Tarling during the men's Tour of Britain race, which begins on 2 September.

NSN previously paid tribute to Tarling and said in a statement: "Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.

"Our deepest condolences go out to Fin's parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend."

Sky News has contacted cycling's governing body the UCI for comment.
