Body of Scottish woman 'found inside suitcase' in Greece

The body of a Scottish woman has reportedly been found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens.

The discovery of the victim has sparked a multi-agency investigation, with Greek authorities, Interpol and Police Scotland working together as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances of the death.

In a statement, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) named the woman as Elizabeth, but has yet to respond to a Sky News request for her surname.

A FCDO spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with Elizabeth's family during this difficult time. We are providing consular support and are in contact with the local authorities."

According to Greek media reports, Elizabeth is believed to have been 38 years old and arrived in the country from the United States via Cyprus on 29 June.

Newspaper Kathimerini reported her body was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the central Athens district of Kypseli on 18 July.

Interpol data was said to have helped identify her.

Investigators are continuing to reconstruct her final movements in a bid to solve the circumstances of her death.

"Officers are providing support to her family in Scotland."

Sky News has contacted the Greek authorities and Interpol for comment.
