Woman dies in sea off Isle of Wight - as search suspended for man in Scotland

A woman has died in the sea off the Isle of Wight, while the search for a man swept into the sea in Scotland by large waves has been suspended.

Shortly after 11.15am on Monday, Isle of Wight Ambulance Service alerted police of concern for a woman in the sea off Lake.

Police attended with HM Coastguard and the woman, aged in her 50s, was brought out of the water but pronounced dead at the scene.

Hampshire Police said: "Sadly, despite the very best efforts of all emergency services in attendance, she was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Her next of kin have been informed.

'Person remains missing'

Separately, shortly after midnight on Tuesday, a search was called off for a man who had believed to have been swept into the sea at Largs, North Ayrshire, by large waves.

An HM Coastguard helicopter and aeroplane were sent as well as Coastguard Rescue Teams from Largs and Ardrossan, and RNLI lifeboats from Largs and Troon. Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended.

After an extensive search, no one was found and searches were suspended at about 9am, pending any new information.

Dozens of schools are shut across Scotland on Tuesday and people are facing travel disruption as high winds sweep Scotland, with warnings of 70mph gusts.

A Met Office yellow warning covering the whole of Scotland and the far north-east of Northern Ireland is in force until 9pm on Tuesday.

Some railway and ferry services are also disrupted due to the conditions.

The latest weather warning comes as the clean-up continues following Storm Boelo which hit the UK over the weekend and left two men dead.

Two women were also taken to hospital after they were hit by a falling tree in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross.
