'Significant development' in Leeds murder investigation as man arrested in London

Police investigating the killing of a 38-year-old man in an apparent group attack have made an arrest in what is being called a "significant development".

Rahiem Jackson, known as Reema, was assaulted last Saturday in Leeds by four people, according to detectives.

West Yorkshire Police said its officers received a report at 10.23pm on 24 October that a man was being attacked with weapons outside a property in the city.

Emergency services then attended the scene in Hedley Chase, New Wortley.

And despite being treated by paramedics, Mr Jackson was pronounced dead soon after, as police launched a murder investigation.

A 26-year-old man has now been arrested in London on suspicion of murder.

He was detained by the Metropolitan Police and remained in custody on Friday.

Mr Jackson's family said the 38-year-old was killed in "a very cowardly, cruel and senseless act of vicious violence".

They added they were "heartbroken" and "left inconsolable".

Paying tribute, they said: "Rahiem was loved and adored by his sisters and family.

"He had a beautiful heart and beautiful soul; his smile was so infectious, and he lit up the room with his presence."

Inquiries into Mr Jackson's death are ongoing by West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates said: "This arrest is a significant development in the murder investigation of Rahiem Jackson."

He added: "Officers are continuing to support the family.

"Extensive inquiries remain ongoing and we continue to appeal for information around the attack.

"We continue to ask anyone who may have seen people arrive or leave the scene on Hedley Chase on Saturday night to come forward."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact West Yorkshire Police on 101 or get in touch with Crimestoppers anonymously.
