Harvey Nichols moves to reassure luxury brands after Frasers swoop

Bosses at Harvey Nichols are trying to reassure the department store chain's hundreds of luxury brand partners about its future stewardship under the retail tycoon Mike Ashley.

Sky News has seen a memo sent by Kate Benson - a former Net-a-Porter executive who is now Harvey Nichols' chief merchant - to suppliers in the wake of its sale out of administration to Frasers Group.

The deal, confirmed on Thursday, salvaged roughly 1,000 jobs although it raised questions about the duration of Frasers' commitment to the company's existing store portfolio.

In her memo, Ms Benson expressed optimism about the upmarket London-based group's future within Frasers, but left some suppliers sceptical that they would receive outstanding payments they are owed in full.

"Throughout the sales process we have spoken at length with Frasers, and we are confident that they understand our business and value our brand relationships," Ms Benson wrote.

"The integration of Harvey Nichols into the Frasers ecosystem enables us to build on the momentum already underway, unlocking sustainable future growth.

"Both Frasers Group and Harvey Nichols are committed to supporting you as brand partners and maintaining these strong relationships."

Among approximately 800 premium and luxury brands sold at Harvey Nichols' six UK stores, which are all being taken on by Frasers, are Armani Beauty, Balmain, Cartier, Juicy Couture, Lancome, Max Mara, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren and Spanx.

However, some luxury goods executives who dealt with Mr Ashley's company when it briefly owned Matchesfashion, an online retailer which collapsed in 2024, have expressed reservations about the new owner.

Frasers was initially frozen out of the Harvey Nichols sale process, but Sky News revealed last month that the company had informed suppliers it had been "obliged" to allow it to participate.

In her memo to luxury brands, Ms Benson said the chain had "made significant progress in repositioning this iconic business, investing in our flagship store, broadening our customer proposition, and strengthening the brand DNA".

"But despite everything we have achieved in a short period of time, the financial pressures we faced have become too great to overcome without future investment."

Ms Benson added that Harvey Nichols wanted to hold further talks with brand partners to "work collaboratively on outstanding payments and orders, to ensure we rebuild a sustainable business that can thrive in the future".

Frasers has been approached for comment.
