Yorkshire Water's Manager of Strategic Partnerships has provided an update on efforts to tackle water quality issues at Scalby Beck.
He's made a firm commitment regarding ongoing environmental work, promising that there will be no stone unturned when it comes to tackling issues at Scalby Beck, revealing that a dedicated 'hit squad' has removed thirty-two tons of silt and is currently investigating up to twenty misconnections.
Miles Cameron assembled a dedicated team to address concerns at the site earlier this year and has now provided a further update on the progress of their operations.
The water company's focus has been on ensuring that their infrastructure is operating efficiently and that any contributing factors to water quality issues in North Beck are identified and resolved.
As part of these efforts, a specialised 'hit squad' was deployed to assess and clean the local sewer network. This proactive approach resulted in the extraction of a significant volume of debris from the system leading up to the Whitby Road bridge before the current season began.
The company is also engaged in a two-year trial to monitor the water quality, with a commitment to transparency and data sharing with relevant organisations, including a representative named Steve from Surfacing and Sewage.
Detailing the initial phase of the operation, Miles Cameron said:
"We know that Scalby Beck is a contributor to water quality in North Bay particularly, there are other I guess we call them actors in the in the frame. I created what we called a hit squad, which was making sure that all Yorkshire Water's assets are in good shape, that they are fit for purpose, they are cleansed. And I'll be very honest that we removed 32 tons of sand and silt out of the sewer up to Whitby Road bridge pre-season. I actively am pursuing that to make sure that is a regular cleansing activity to make sure the capacity is maximised. We will continue to monitor the water quality in Scalby Beck, that is part of that two-year trial. The idea is to share that data as well, to make sure it's visible so we can work and I am eagerly committed to share that with Steve from Surfacing and Sewage as well."
In addition to clearing blockages and monitoring the ongoing water quality, Yorkshire Water is actively investigating the impact of incorrect plumbing setups, known as misconnections, which can lead to wastewater entering the wrong drainage systems.
During a recent update, it was highlighted that the situation at Scalby Beck shares similarities with previous misconnection issues experienced at 'peace on the Glenn'.
To combat this, the company has enlisted the services of Lane's, a specialist drainage contractor, to locate and rectify these faults. Initial assessments have already pointed to a number of potential misconnections across a mix of newly constructed housing estates and older residential properties in the area.
A new package of work has been officially signed off within the last week to ensure these specific problems are addressed promptly.
Providing an update on the ongoing drainage investigations, Mr Cameron said:
"We are doing some work. In fact, we've just commissioned lanes with drainage contractor. There were potentially up to 20 misconnections identified, some of the new build housing estate up there and some of some older properties. And that exercise is ongoing as we speak. A package of work I've just signed off in this last week to attend and make sure they're tackled. Also, everything, let no stone unturned effectively, yeah."
