Yorkshire Marine Medics Take Rescue Efforts to Denmark

British Divers Marine Life Rescue Extends its International Training to Denmark

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), a registered charity dedicated to the rescue of marine life, recently expanded its international collaboration efforts by conducting a cetacean strandings response training course near Copenhagen, Denmark.

The initiative aims to enhance marine mammal rescue capabilities within the country, stemming from a movement triggered by a significant stranding incident in 2019.

Two BDMLR instructors, Dan and Em, travelled to Hundested for a weekend to deliver the specialist training. They joined Flemming Larsen from Dansk Redningstream for Havpattedyr, a Danish cetacean welfare group, and cetacean expert Birgith Sloth. The training brought together a group of 30 veterinary students, primarily from Copenhagen University.

The comprehensive course began with lectures covering essential topics such as cetacean biology, species identification, health assessment, first aid, decision-making, rescue techniques, incident management, and health and safety.

Following the theoretical sessions, participants engaged in practical exercises utilising BDMLR's inflatable water-filled whale and dolphin models. This allowed the students to apply their newly acquired knowledge, undertaking refloations with specialist rescue equipment and techniques.

As part of this ongoing collaboration, Dansk Redningstream for Havpattedyr has acquired its own whale rescue pontoons and animal models from BDMLR. These resources will be crucial for the continued development of a robust response team in Denmark. The Danish group is also engaging in discussions with Government representatives regarding the regulations around cetacean rescue and how such protocols can be integrated into their national framework.

The foundation for this partnership was laid in 2019, following an incident where a sei whale was reportedly lost in a fjord for nearly two weeks. This event spurred an appeal for the establishment of a dedicated response network and improved policy concerning marine mammal strandings in Denmark. BDMLR expressed its satisfaction in fulfilling this appeal and stated its commitment to continuing support for Danish rescue efforts in the future.
