Yorkshire Coast Prepares for State Funeral

Yorkshire Coast firms and organisations are making changes to their services and opening hours ahead of Her Majesty The Queen’s State Funeral on Monday.

The funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey in London.

In a statement, the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy has confirmed the day will be a Bank Holiday, to allow individuals, businesses, and other organisations an opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the current period of national mourning.

It will mean many shops and businesses will be closed.

The majority of Scarborough Borough Council services will be suspended or closed on Monday 19 September as a mark of respect for the state funeral of Her Majesty The Queen and to honour the national bank holiday.

Council offices and the Customer First service will close.

All types of household bin collections, including chargeable domestic collections, and commercial waste collections (unless otherwise stated) will be suspended and pushed back by one day. Collections will take place on Saturday 24 September so five days of collections during the week will still be provided. The bin calendar on the council’s website at scarborough.gov.uk, which people can use to check their collection day, has been updated with the revised service information.

The council will continue to provide street cleansing, bereavement services, its homelessness duty and some other essential services during the bank holiday.

Council car parks and public toilets will remain open.

Its Everyone Active operated sites at Scarborough Sports Village, Whitby Leisure Centre and Pindar Leisure Centre will close.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council say:

We have decided to cancel our planned waste and recycling collections on Monday. Blue and brown bin collections that were scheduled for Monday will now be emptied on the next scheduled collection day on Monday 3 October. On that date, our waste and recycling teams will collect any resulting additional blue bin waste in clear plastic bags. Extra brown bin waste can be taken to household waste recycling sites.
Essential services such as social care for adults and children will continue as previously advised.
