The Beckett Football League have declared the current season "null and void"
The local league which includes teams from Sherburn, Ayton, Whitby, Thornton Dale, Heslerton and Snainton asked it's member clubs to vote on options for the season after the government announced that grass roots football can restart from the end of march.
The league say 70% of clubs responded with a variety of opinions on the best way forwards. Some expressed no desire to continue, some wanted a full resumption and others favoured a cup run but no league games
The league say
"Each outcome has its own negatives when deciding a way forwards and so as a league committee we had a vote and the overwhelming outcome was to null and void the season as whole and look forward to starting next season fresh and with the prospect of a full season looking better all the time."
The league say the feedback from the clubs highlighted just how complicated the situation had become.
"We had more complications than simply arranging fixtures, some clubs have 19 league games to play, some have the loss of their home ground in and around April due to Cricket and also on the aspect of cricket we have clubs who lose the bulk of squads to cricket at that time of the year and so those clubs will seriously struggle to fulfil multiple fixtures per week. This is not a decision we have taken lightly as we are keen footballers and know how much getting back playing will mean to the lads and clubs in general but we just cannot see a way to finish the season that will suit everyone so our decision is to Null and Void the season and look forward to a new start in the summer. Hopefully we can also look forward to the prospect of a proper league AGM before the season starts."
