The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind along the Yorkshire Coast.
Communities from Whitby down to Bridlington are bracing for an active weather front sweeping southeast across the UK this Thursday. The Met Office has forecast a period of intense activity, with strong winds expected to bring gusts of 50-55 mph across the region. More exposed locations, including cliff-top areas near Scarborough and Filey, could potentially see gusts reaching as high as 60-70 mph.
The warning is in place from 05:00 to 20:00 on Thursday, with authorities urging residents and visitors to prepare for potential travel disruption and hazardous coastal conditions.
Travel operators across North and East Yorkshire are warning of likely disruption throughout the day. Commuters and those planning local journeys should anticipate delays to road, rail, and bus services, while high-sided vehicles on bridges and exposed routes are particularly at risk. The adverse conditions may also lead to the short-term loss of power and essential services in more remote parts of the region.
The Yorkshire Coast's geography makes it particularly susceptible to the incoming weather. Met Office officials have highlighted the dangers posed to those near the shoreline, noting that spray and large, unpredictable waves are likely to impact coastal routes and sea fronts. Regarding the safety risks involved, a spokesperson for the Met Office advised:
“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
As the front moves southeast, winds are expected to ease from the north as the day progresses. In the meantime, emergency services and local councils are recommending that residents check their travel plans well in advance and prepare for potential power outages by gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.
The Met Office further emphasised that weather warnings can be dynamic, stating:
“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
