A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place for the Yorkshire Coast this afternoon and early evening, bringing the threat of heavy rain, large hail, and travel disruption.
A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for the Yorkshire Coast today, with the alert active between 14:00 and 21:00.
While many areas are expected to miss the worst of the weather, forecasters have cautioned that scattered thunderstorms could bring localized disruption throughout the afternoon and early evening.
According to the latest guidance, heavy rain, large hail, gusty winds, and frequent lightning are all possible where storms do break out. Forecasters predict that between 15 and 30 millimetres of rain could fall in a short space of time in a few locations.
The conditions are expected to create challenges for travellers and commuters. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
Motorists are also being urged to exercise caution, as spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and the potential for some road closures.
There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with the potential for damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds. Furthermore, there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and that other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
Residents are being advised to take preventative measures to protect their properties.
The Met Office advised:
"Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before gusty winds arrive, check to ensure moveable objects or temporary structures are well secured. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences."
People are also encouraged to cope with potential power cuts by preparing in advance. Officials recommend gathering essential items such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.
For those who may be caught outdoors during the severe weather, clear safety instructions have been provided.
The Met Office warned:
"If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground."
Those living in areas at risk of flash flooding are being urged to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
To avoid delays, travellers are encouraged to check road conditions as well as bus and train timetables before setting off, amending their travel plans if necessary.
The Met Office added:
"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
