Woman Arrested After Suspected Irritant Thrown At Rough Sleepers In Scarborough

Police have arrested a woman and are searching for further suspects after a suspected irritant was thrown at a man and a woman sleeping rough in Scarborough.

Detectives in Scarborough have launched an extensive investigation after two individuals sleeping rough were targeted in an early-morning attack.

North Yorkshire Police report that a man and a woman, who were sleeping rough in the Ramshill Road area of the town, were subjected to an assault in which a suspected irritant was thrown at them.

The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday, 15 July, at approximately 2.30am.

Following the attack, both victims required medical attention. They were subsequently taken to hospital to receive treatment for facial injuries. Police have stated that these injuries are not believed to be serious at this time.

In response to the incident, a significant emergency operation was mobilised. Authorities confirmed that all three emergency services were involved in managing the scene and providing assistance to the victims.

The scale of the emergency response necessitated the implementation of safety cordons across two separate areas of Scarborough. Both Ramshill Road and Northway were cordoned off by emergency personnel, and road closures were put in place to secure the environment.

North Yorkshire Police have confirmed that one woman has been arrested in connection with the incident. She currently remains in police custody.

However, officers believe others may be involved. An extensive and ongoing investigation is currently underway to trace any additional suspects connected to the attack.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police issued a statement expressing gratitude to the community and those who provided immediate help.

They said:

"Our thanks go to members of the public who assisted at the scene and to the local community for their patience while the road closures remain in place."

To assist with the ongoing investigation, officers are now issuing a public appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward.

If you witnessed the events unfold in the Ramshill Road area around 2.30am, or if you hold any information that could aid detectives in their search for further suspects, you are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police.

Information can be reported directly by calling 101. When speaking with officers, please ensure you quote the reference number 12260134286.

For individuals who prefer to share what they know without revealing their identity, information can be passed on completely anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
