Withernsea Market Plans Approved

Plans for a new ‘Coastal Market’ at Withernsea’s seafront have been approved by East Riding Council.

The approved planning application proposed establishing the market in part of Valley Gardens, in the East Yorkshire coastal town.

The plans suggested erecting 10 “micro-kiosks” in a horseshoe shape formation in the gardens which will act as small retail units. Plans say the kiosks would be at offered at “incentivised low-cost rates to support start-up and cottage industry businesses.”

The site could be used for a variety of events, according to plans. It is said: “The Coastal Market is designed to provide a focal venue for tourism through markets, events and festivals, generating new footfall and providing marketable opportunities to drive visitors into the town.”

The market is a part of the the Withernsea Seafront Regeneration Scheme. The scheme, which is a partnership between Withernsea Town Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, seeks to support the redevelopment and enhancement of key seafront locations.

The establishment of new facilities, and the creation of new marketable tourism offers in the town are also focuses of the scheme. Plans also state: “The Coastal Market will have set minimum opening requirements ensuring a year-round offer.”

The kiosks will be light blue in colour. The council’s decisions notice states they shall only be used for retail purposes.

The kiosks will be able to sell goods, other than hot foods, between 7am and 9pm. The notice also specifies that “no kiosk shall be used or occupied as living accommodation, as a person’s main or sole place of residence, or as a place for overnight sleeping.”

It is said within planning documents that the Town Council received “overwhelming support” from the community. There were also no objections from local businesses during the consultation or initial planning applications.
