The Blues' third new signing of the summer has joined from Newton Aycliffe from the division below.
Nelson, 26, picked up Aycliffe's Supporters' Player of the Season Award for the 2024/25 campaign, and arrives at the Towbar Express Stadium having previously represented Guisborough Town.
Whitby Town manager, Gary Liddle, said:
"Alex joins us after another consistent season for Newton Aycliffe where he came away with a top award to show for it.
"He's a different type of defender to what we already have and has a great dedication to the game.
"He's quick, committed, and he's looking forward to testing himself at a higher level and I've no doubt he's got the characteristics to be a huge success.
"I'm really pleased to be able to add him to the squad."
Nelson is just as happy to be linking up with Liddle and the Seasiders too:
"We played last year, at Whitby, for Newton Aycliffe. I thought it had a great set up, obviously the fans are very passionate
"I think its a great club to be a part of especially the manager, I know quite a few of the players as well, I know how competitive they want to be this year and obviously how they want me to be part of the squad and try and bring as many assists as possible throughout the season.
"A couple of weeks ago, the season had finished and Newton Aycliffe had missed out on the play offs and then it wasn't too long after that maybe a couple of weeks after that Gary messaged me and I had a few other offers, but as soon as Gary messaged me, I think my mind was made up to come and play for Whitby."
"I knew about Gary, he's obviously been a professional for a lot of years.
"He was straight to the point how he wanted me to be part of the squad and I think he's a massive pull for the football club for bringing players in and keeping players at the club as well.
"I've played in the Northern League, for quite a few years, ever since I was 17 really and I've bounced around a few different clubs, but probably my best spell was at Guisborough. I really enjoyed my time there and then obviously Newton Aycliffe provided me with the opportunity to play higher. I wanted to try and test myself, put me through a new challenge and we did very well as a squad, last year. A challenge came about with Gary asking me to come, I can't wait to get started and set myself another goal and a challenge of obviously playing at another higher level."
