Whitby RNLI Crew Rescue Dog and Owners After Cliff Fall

Both Whitby lifeboats were launched on Wednesday (26th November) after two people were cut off by the tide while rescuing their dog.

The pair had been walking from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby when their dog ran through a bush and fell over 200ft from the cliff top.

Fearing the worst they made their way to the beach in search of the dog.

They found the spaniel, uninjured at the base of the cliffs but by the time they reached him the incoming tide was approaching.

A third member of the group rang the coastguard to report the incident.

At 4.43pm the RNLI crew were paged and launched both lifeboats. The Coastguard were also in attendance on the cliff top.

After a search in strong southerly winds and driving rain, the casualties were located.

The pair and the dog were transferred to the inshore lifeboat, but then moved to the all weather lifeboat due to the poor sea conditions.

The all weather lifeboat crew returned the casualties to the lifeboat station where they were checked over and given safety advice.

Leah Hunter, helm on the inshore lifeboat said.

'We strongly advise keeping dogs on a lead on the cliff top, even the most well behaved dogs can get into trouble due to the steep nature of the cliffs and proximity to the paths. This is the second incident we've attended this year. We were very relieved to find that the dog was unharmed, but it isn't always a happy ending.'

If you see anyone in difficulty in or on the water dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard
