Whitby Harbour will get a visit from a dredger in the coming days after local fishermen complained the harbour is silting up.
A build up of silt in Whitby Harbour will be dealt with in the coming days.
Local Councillor Neil Swannick has reassured harbour users that a dredger is on the way but says the situation has been complicated after the operator of the vessel went in to liquidation in June.
Whitby Harbour has its own dredger, The ‘Sandsend’ was converted from a dumb barge in 2003. The excavating pontoon was the first of its kind and had an extensive modification in 2016. A Hitachi long reach excavator was mounted on the vessel and two hydraulically operated spud legs.
in 2020 Scarborough Borough Council turned over the management of the vessel to an outside company as it looks to solve a shortfall of qualified masters to operate the vessel.
The outsourcing also saw the dredger taken to other ports around the coast as a way of creating new income.
The dredger maintains the depths of the channels and harbours at Whitby and Scarborough. The channel depth within Whitby is maintained where possible at a depth of 1.4 metres below chart datum.
Councillor Swannick says there have been issues around the dredger after the operating company went bust.
