Whitby faces a number of demographic challenges which could impact primary schools and the local economy.
Local Councillor - Neil Swannick - says the recently approved merger of the town's two secondary schools is, in part, because of falling pupil numbers which he says is due to a bigger underlying problem facing the town.
Councillor Swannick says there a danger that some of Whitby's primary schools might have to merge in the future if the situation doesn't improve.
He says the recently approved merger of the town's two secondary schools has highlighted the issues Whitby will face if it can't attract more young families.
The combined pressures of falling pupil numbers and financial challenges prompted the merger proposals for Whitby's two secondary schools earlier this year. That proposal was eventually approved by North Yorkshire council and will see the Eskdale School site close in August 2024 with all Whitby secondary pupils being accommodated on the Caedmon College site from September 2024.
