Whitby's County Councillors have been asked if they would back a "Save Eskdale School" campaign.
The Whitby Secondary Partnership is proposing to close the school in September and merge it with Caedmon college.
The Governors say the proposal is a result of low pupil numbers and significant financial challenges. They say a considerable amount of the budgets is spent on maintaining the two sites when it could be spent on curriculum and teaching resources.
It's the second time in 7 years that proposals to close the school have been put forward.
North Yorkshire County Council will decide next month whether to put the plan out to public consultation or dismiss it.
Whitby West County Councillor - Phil Trumper - was asked for his views on the situation by members of the town council this week.
County Councillor for Whitby Streonshalh division, Neil Swannick, was also asked if he would support any campaign to save Eskdale School.
Councillor Trumper says he wants Whitby's youngsters to have the best education possible.
North Yorkshire County Councils Executive Member for Education and Skills is expected to make a decision about progressing the proposal on February 7th. The County Council could either reject the proposal or put it out for public consultation. If consultation is approved there will be an initial 6 week public consultation period during which all stakeholders will have opportunity to comment on the proposal and a public meeting will be held.
