This weekend's Christmas Festival in Whitby has been cancelled due to warnings of extreme weather but the Ice Rink will open as planned.
Whitby Town Council say :
"Scarborough Borough Council, working with the emergency services, has advised Whitby Town Council that a severe weather warning has been issued for Friday and Saturday, which make the continuation of the Festival Market and entertainment impossible. High winds and highs seas are expected. We have taken the decision, with much regret, that it would be unsafe and unwise for this year's Festival to go on.
We apologise deeply for the disappointment that this will cause, but the safety of everyone involved is our priority, based on the advice we have received.
We are contacting the traders, stall holders and entertainers who had been booked to support the Christmas Festival and we have made a formal announcement of the cancellation through the Festival facebook page, but we need the message to spread to everyone who had planned to attend to let them know that the weekend will not be going ahead this year.
Once we have assessed the impact on everyone involved, we will announce our plans for 2022."
Whitby Winter Festival organisers had said yesterday that the say the town's ice rink would open as planned on Friday, but the deteriorating forecast has lead them to delay the opening until Sunday. They Say:
"We were very disappointed to hear that the Christmas Market has been cancelled this weekend due to the poor weather forecast. This is such a shame for the organisers, stall holders and everyone planning to visit.
Further to our earlier update, we have been in touch with the authorities and been advised to postpone the opening to ensure everyone remains safe. The ice rink will now open at 10AM SUNDAY 28 NOVEMBERTickets sold for Friday and Saturday will be automatically refunded.A rescheduled display from the Billingham Skaters will take place at 6.45pm on Sunday. All welcome to come down to watch.Thank you for your continued support "
