Benches along Marine Drive have been wrecked by the power of the waves crashing onto the carriageway overnight.
The Yorkshire Coast is currently being battered by storm Babet, with heavy rain and strong winds forecast for the rest of the day and only slowly easing into Saturday.
There are two weather warnings in force. One is for rain with up to 80mm of rain possible on the North York Moors as two bands of rain collide over the area today.
The other is for strong winds and is in force from midday today until midday tomorrow. 60mph gusts are possible.
Dangerous waves are crashing onto promenades as people are warned to keep a safe distance.

There has been some damage along seafronts locally, with some benches ruined by the force of the sea coming onto the roads.
Marine Drive in Scarborough remains closed this morning.
