Steve Cram to Open New Scarborough Athletics Track Today

The official opening of Scarborough's new Bramcote Athletics track will take place later with Olympic Medallist Steve Cram starting a special race.

The Scarborough mile will see hundreds of local people trying out the new 400m running track.

The facility is managed by Scarborough College but will also be used by local sports clubs and primary schools.

Remco Weeda from the college says today's events are open to everyone.

The development consists of a 400m, 6 lane athletics running track of an elliptical shape with straight sections on the longer sides parallel to Holbeck Hill and Filey Road. The latter includes an 8 lane finishing straight, also suitable for 100m races.

A 75m long/triple jump facility is planned between the track and the northern part of the Holbeck Hill frontage. The grassed area within the track will eventually be set out as a rugby pitch, measuring 90 x 60m.

Today's opening celebrations will see a special Scarborough Mile race taking place at 3pm with hundreds of local people getting to try out the new track.

Remco Weeda from the college says the hope is that the track will benefit the whole community.

Remco says the track is already being used by a number of clubs and can be used into the evening with the aid of the tracks floodlights.

Steve Cram is a British retired track and field athlete who was one of the world’s dominant middle distance runners during the 1980s. He created several world records over the course of his career and was the first man to run 1500 m under 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

The winner of the 1500 m at the 1983 World Championships and a silver medallist at the Olympic Games the next year, he had also won several gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. Known for his penchant for setting frequent world records, he was equally famous for his on-field rivalry with fellow Britons Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett. Following his retirement he embarked on a career as a television presenter and athletics commentator, motivational speaker and athletics coach.
