As Scarborough Borough Council enters it's final 24 hours the town's MP suggests a replacement town council should include Eastfield and Scalby.
Tomorrow will be Scarborough Borough Council's final day.
Along with the county council it's being abolished and replaced with a single unitary authority for the whole of North Yorkshire.
The changes will leave parts of Scarborough without a town or parish council and a consultation is currently underway around plans to create a new town council for the affected areas.
Scarborough's MP, Sir Robert Goodwill, thinks any new town council for Scarborough should include some of the neighbouring parishes.
Scarborough and Harrogate are the only areas of North Yorkshire where there are currently no parish level councils, both towns were previously home to borough councils.
Other parts of the Yorkshire Coast already have parish councils, which is some cases, such as Whitby and Filey, choose to be know as town councils.
Plans to create a town council for Scarborough are currently out for public consultation. If there are no major changes to the plans, Scarborough Town Council could be created next year and would have an electorate of around 28,000 people with the parish. It would be set to retain a mayor and will have the opportunity to take on responsibility for “any assets formerly belonging to Scarborough Council” such as the Town Hall.
Scarborough Town Council is set to be divided into five wards: Castle, Falsgrave and Stepney, Northstead, Weaponness and Ramshill, and Woodlands, and a total of 15 councillors would be elected.
However, Scarborough MP, Sir Robert Goodwill, thinks any new Scarborough Town Council should also include some of the other local parishes such as Eastfield and Scalby.
Sir Robert thinks there would be long term benefits to the town council having a larger footprint and absorbing some of the neighbouring parishes.
If the plans for a Scarborough Town Council do go ahead then it would be formed for administrative purposes from April 2024, and the first elections would be on May 2, 2024, when councillors would be elected for a reduced term of three years.
Elections would then take place every four years from 2027.
Until a town council is created then the charter trustees – the councillors on North Yorkshire Council representing the electoral divisions in the unparished areas – will continue to carry out ceremonial duties.The six charter trustees are Cllrs Eric Broadbent, Liz Colling, Janet Jefferson, Rich Maw, Tony Randerson, and John Ritchie.
The consultation, which is seeking detailed recommendations from residents, is now open and will run until Friday, May 5.
