A senior Scarborough councillor is worried about the future of the town's West Pier.
Janet Jefferson represents Castle Ward in Scarborough:
" I was concerned that we were only going to do a repair of the steel sheet piling, which would only give us a 10 year longevity of the harbour. I'm very concerned because 10 years is not a long period in order for us to fulfil the harbour, our heritage, we had money when we passed the reserves over. I think to replace this steel sheep piling would've given us 50 years.
"And I'm concerned government funding is involved here. We are going to build a new building, a big shed, which will add more weight onto the pier. And if we had replaced the steel sheep piling, we would have 50 years guaranteed. And I'm concerned that the wishes of the users of the harbour are not gonna be fulfilled by the fact that we've only got a 10 year life."
Councillor Jefferson feels the plan that adds weight to the pier needs looking at again:
"I'm concerned that the fact that we are only repairing the steel sheet piling, which not only takes care of the mowing of the vessels and the landing of the catch, but also it is the sustainability and the weight loading of the harbour itself.
"And we are going forward adding extra weight to that pier. But the actual 10 year drive of repair, to me is not good enough. And we should have gone for a 50 year, which would've been four to five million. You've got to think to the future here. I'm concerned that we are spending £11.5 million on a pier which is a very important asset and I'm concerned. We want a peer that's gonna last long enough to sustain all this."
