Seamer Hotel Expansion Plan Approved

A hotel in Seamer has been given the go-ahead for a two-storey expansion of the property.

The Mayfield Hotel at 10 – 11 Main Street, Seamer, near Scarborough, can build an extension for 10 new hotel rooms after receiving the green light from North Yorkshire Council.

Mr N Thomas’ proposal includes associated landscaping and parking for the Mayfield Hotel.

According to a planning report, the existing car park will be retained, with a further 10 car parking spaces provided at the former ‘Copper Horse’ site, to the south of the application site, which is “within the control of the applicant”.

Earlier this month, Mr Thomas was given permission to reopen the Copper Horse pub on Seamer’s Main Street and to build a single-storey rear extension.

Neither Seamer Parish Council nor the Highway Authority raised objections regarding the Mayfield Hotel scheme, with the latter proposing a condition “regarding provision of approved access, turning, and parking areas”.

The HA added that the additional bedrooms would lead to “a small increase in trips generated by the site and an increase in parking demand”, however, it said that the additional parking proposed was “appropriate for the number of additional bedrooms”.

There are currently 16 guest rooms at the hotel, and the applicant also operates seven self-contained holiday cottages throughout the village, according to a report.

Planners said that guests will be able to use the on-site restaurant, bar, and indoor play area, as well as the wider services within Seamer village.

A supporting statement noted that the additional bedrooms would “ensure the long-term viability of the hotel, which also acts as an important community hub within Seamer offering numerous services, activities and facilities for residents”.

Officers concluded that “whilst the extension will be contemporary in appearance, it is of an appropriate scale, form and detailed design to not compete with the character and appearance of the more historic, existing hotel, and wider area”.

The application was approved by North Yorkshire Council, subject to conditions, on Friday, November 21.
