The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough has made an unexpected discovery that promises to significantly improve its services for the local homeless community.
Staff at the Rainbow centre say they have found a hidden room which had been sealed off for years. It is now set to be transformed into a vital part of the centre’s operations.
The newly revealed space was once part of the centre's homeless day facility before the building underwent alterations long ago.
“Home,” the daytime area dedicated to individuals experiencing homelessness, regularly welcomes 30 to 40 visitors daily, providing them with warmth, food, and comfort. The opening of this secret room is anticipated to enhance the safety and welcoming atmosphere of “Home,” making it an even more supportive environment for those in need.
Sharon from Castle7 Construction, upon learning about the discovery, swiftly offered her assistance. She assembled a skilled team to begin the renovation, and the wall separating the new space was demolished.
“There’s still work to do to get the space looking its best, but the newly expanded ‘Home’ is going to be fantastic,” a spokesperson from the Rainbow Centre said, highlighting the potential impact of the renovation on their services.
The centre expressed immense gratitude to several local businesses and individuals who contributed to this project:
- Sharon, Daz, and Alex from Castle7 Construction for their efforts in coordinating the work.
- Nigel at NDL Electrical Limited for facilitating the relocation of electrical sockets.
- Tony from Neat Flooring Ltd for generously offering to install carpeting in the new area.
- James from MKM Building Supplies for supplying essential materials.
- Jonny and Matty for their plumbing expertise.
“This is work we could never have afforded ourselves, and you’ve genuinely made a wish come true,” the spokesperson added, emphasising the importance of community support in realising this project.
