A £50,000 community project fund to support local initiatives has been launched by Scarborough Town Council.
The community grants programme is offering local not-for-profit organisations, community groups, registered charities, and schools within the Scarborough Town Council area a chance to apply for funding for their projects.
The scheme will offer grants of up to £5,000 for large projects that deliver clear, lasting community benefit, while grants of up to £1,000 are available for specific projects, including the purchase of equipment, setting up events, training, or small capital improvements.
Donations under £500 can also be sought for one-off contributions to local initiatives.
The focus of the project is to support local organisations, while national charities “must show a strong local presence”.
Organisations interested in applying can find more details about the application process on the town council’s website at https://www.scarboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk/community-grants/.
“We’re committed to supporting the organisations already doing the hard work on the ground – community groups, local charities, clubs, and schools for non-curriculum activities,” the town council said.
Town mayor, Cllr Thomas Murray, stated:
“If you’re part of a local community group or charity and could use a bit of support, get in touch. This funding is here to back the doers and get Scarborough moving again.”
The project’s announcement comes after a meeting of STC’s community and place committee in October saw members disagree on the impact on precepts of using a £50,000 service delivery fund for grant schemes.
Commenting on the grant project, Reform’s Cllr William Stuart said:
“If your group has a project that will benefit our town, please do consider applying.
“Let’s make sure this funding reaches the people and projects it was meant to support!”
Independent councillor Rich Maw said:
“If you’re community-minded, part of a group with a plan to make a difference, or if a small amount of seed-funding could help you launch or expand a project, please take full advantage of the scheme!”
Applications will be considered by the authority’s community and place committee which is next set to meet on December 17.
