A team of students from Scarborough UTC has secured third place at the prestigious Aramco STEM Racing World Finals in Singapore, bringing home the bronze medal.
The awards ceremony, which took place on 1st October, marked the culmination of a competition that draws together the best young STEM Racing students from across the globe.
The STEM Racing challenge, formerly known as F1 in Schools, requires student teams to create their own Formula 1 team. This involves designing, building, and testing a 15-centimetre scale model car, which is then raced on a 20-metre track powered by a compressed gas cylinder. The journey to the World Finals is a significant undertaking, with teams often working for one to three years to achieve success in their home countries before competing internationally.
Building on their previous victory at the UK National Final, where they were crowned UK winners with the highest ever points total, the Scarborough UTC team earned further recognition in Singapore. The team was nominated for several awards, including Best Engineered Car, Pit Display, and Research and Development, and will be bringing home the Scrutineering Award.
Helen Dowds, Principal of Scarborough UTC, expressed her pride in the team's accomplishments. "We are so proud of the team and all they have achieved," she said. "Their hard work, dedication and talent have really shone through. To be able to compete on the world stage like this is phenomenal, and their accolades are well deserved".
In addition to the team's overall third-place finish, team member Jack Metcalfe earned one of only ten places awarded to finalists at the Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy. Ms Dowds commented on this individual success, stating, "We are especially pleased for Jack, his place at the Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy will enable him to continue his studies in engineering with access to amazing facilities and world class mentors".
The principal highlighted the wider significance of the victory, asserting that the students' awards demonstrate the value of a technical education. "The students' awards in this competition really show the opportunities and skills a technical education can offer; local innovation really has led to global success!" she stated.
Ms Dowds also extended her gratitude to those who supported the team's journey, saying, "Our huge thanks of course go to Mr Shephard, our Director of Engineering, Scarborough Business Ambassadors, and all the other staff, employers and local businesses who have helped and supported the team. We can't wait to celebrate with them when they return home".
The excitement of the win was shared by fellow students in Scarborough who were watching the awards ceremony.
The competition required teams to present their work in project management, enterprise, engineering, and design through portfolios and a verbal presentation to judges, alongside the performance of their miniature racing car.
The Scarborough Team gave a tour of their Pit Display on the STEM Racing World Finals TV channel.
