Scarborough Sparkle got underway with the traditional community lantern parade.
The Sparkle event will be at the Open Air Theatre throughout the weekend.
Lee Threadgold from Animated Objects says tonight's lantern parade will involve lots of local groups.
The parade starts at 5.30pm on Peasholm Drive and makes its way to the opening of Scarborough Sparkle at the Open Air Theatre.

Lee says there are a number of new community groups taking part in tonight's parade.
The Sparkle Event itself gets underway from 5pm with Paddy on the this is the Coast Stage, timings for tonight are.
- 5:00 - Event opens
- 5:00 - This is the Coast stage with Paddy
- 5:45 - Lantern parade enters Sparkle
- 6:00 - Official Opening of the event
- 6:15 - St Martin's School Choir
- 7:00 - Naomi James & Damien Rhodes
- 8:00 - CV Rap Artist
- 9:00 - Event Close
O'Briens Funfair will be operating at the site throughout the weekend. There will also be street entertainers, street food and the Grinch wandering around between 5pm and 9pm tonight.
Entry to the sparkle event is free. Timings for Saturday and Sunday are:
