Scarborough Sixth Form College is set to stage its annual music showcase event on Saturday at the Market Hall.
The event provides a crucial platform for students to display their musical talents and skills.
Paul Nash is the music teacher at the Scarborough Sixth Form College:
He explained the significance of the event, stating it is "a step into the professional world of music performance":
Mr Nash added that it offers students a "really good opportunity to... show their skills and talents" and "sets them up for their next step on their journey in their music career":
The showcase is treated as a fully professional event, with preparations having taken place for about four weeks.
He emphasised: "There's nothing amateur about it", noting that the production includes a full PA system, lights, and backline. Student bands are described as "very well rehearsed":
A unique aspect is that musicians will "swap around and play with various different bands throughout the evening," allowing them to "experience what it what it's like to be a session musician as well".
Mr. Nash views the event as "a really good step for them on their journey to become a professional musician".
Attendees can expect a diverse range of performances. While mainly focusing on rock and pop, covering music from the 60s and 70s through to modern styles, the showcase will also feature "a little bit of jazz in there later on" and "a little bit of classical". The main showcase sets consist of cover versions of well-known songs. These are presented in two 45-minute sets with a short interval.
Following the main showcase, the evening will highlight original material performed by three student bands. These include Black White Square Form, known at the local jazz club for playing improvised modern jazz; Socket, described as a "really really good" all-girl rock group; and The Limeies, who play post rock, modern, and a bit of Prague.
Paul says the college community are "very very supportive" of the event:
Tickets for the showcase can be obtained in advance via a QR code found on posters and social media, which links to a 'pay what you feel' ticket source website. Alternatively, admission is £5 on the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with music commencing at 7 pm. Mr. Nash expressed his hope that attendees "might be seeing some of the future stars of stage and screen", adding that many former students have gone on to do "really impressive stuff".
