An historic Scarborough school has applied for permission to build an ‘Edwardian-style’ sports pavilion on its grounds.
Scarborough College wants to build a two-storey sports pavilion next to its Grade-II Listed main school building as part of a proposal to upgrade facilities.
The site, which was purpose built as a school at the end of the 19th century, is a thriving school catering for boarding and day pupils.
Two sheds, which are currently on the site of the proposed sports pavilion, have also been proposed for demolition.
The age range of pupils at the school is from three years up to 18 years and the school is a significant local employer, submitted plans state.
“Particularly due to international and regional boarding pupils, the school generates income from outside the area. The success of the school is reflected by the fact that the school is currently running at full capacity,” according to a submitted planning proposal.
If plans are given the green light, the sheds will be replaced by a new two-storey block with a footprint of 432 sq metres. The first floor of the sports pavilion would be 387 sq metres, and the new building’s total proposed area is 819 sq metres.
The proposal states:
“The college is in a conservation area with many fine Edwardian buildings in the vicinity. It is intended that the massing, detailing, and choice of materials will be similar to an Edwardian sports pavilion.”
“The proposed building will be clad in brickwork at ground floor level to match the existing college, and weatherboarding above ground floor to evoke the spirit of an early twentieth century cricket pavilion.”
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application which is currently open to representations.
