The Scarborough Rainbow Centre hosted its first ever Rainbow Ball on Saturday
The charity, known for running a food bank, ventured into holding a large-scale banquet for the first time.
Despite it being a new type of event for the Rainbow Centre, the ball proved to be a remarkable success, completely selling out by the Tuesday of last week.
Mike Lynsky is one of the organisers of the event, he expressed shock at the sell-out but says it has inspired the team to commit to delivering another event next year.
"We sold out, I think on Tuesday and we thought we might do half the amount of tickets and it, with our first one completely sold out on Tuesday. We've had people wanting to come on on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and Saturday as well, and we've had to turn people away.
So our next year's bowl, because we are gluttons for punishment and we wanna do it again, is on the 6th of June, 2026. Tickets will go on sale in about a week's time."
The evening saw strong support from both the local business community and individuals who wanted to attend the party. There was also "great support in the auction" with donations from businesses, including "unique, money can't buy items,".
Mike Lynsky says the support form local people and business has been impressive.
"It's the first one we've ever done. It's not the sort of thing that the Rainbow Centre's known for, and it is a bit weird that we run a food bank and we just had a banquet.
It's, it's a bit strange, but it's, it's been incredible. They had such good support from around the sort of local business community and just normal people who want to come and, and have a party with us. It's, it's been great"
While the exact amount raised by the event is not yet known, the funds generated are expected to make a "massive difference". An announcement detailing the amount raised is expected to be made "probably on Monday". The importance of donations was highlighted, with the point made that just a few pounds can purchase ten tins of food, which can significantly help someone struggling in this town of Scarborough.
Looking ahead, the Rainbow Centre intends to make the ball an annual event. Despite acknowledging the significant effort involved in organising, Mike stated, "we are glutton for punishment and we want to do it again". The date for the next Rainbow Ball has already been set for the 6th of June 2026. Tickets for the next event are anticipated to go on sale in about a week's time and will be available on the rainbowcenter.org website.
