Scarborough Rainbow Centre Launches £10,000 Christmas Appeal Amidst Rising Family Struggles

The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough has launched its annual Christmas Appeal, aiming to raise £10,000 to provide essential festive support to local families facing hardship during the Christmas season.

The centre stressed that nobody should have to go without during what should be a "joyful and magical season".

The appeal focuses on delivering critical support, including the distribution of food vouchers and gifts for children throughout December, alongside the centre's usual daily services. This special festive support is intended to relieve some of the enormous pressure faced by households in Scarborough who might otherwise struggle. Sadly, The Rainbow Centre expects hundreds of families to require this help over the festive period.

James Howard, Fundraising Officer at The Rainbow Centre, highlighted the scale of the challenge the centre faces each year. When discussing the financial target, Mr Howard stated:

"It's to raise £10,000 to support individuals and families in Scarborough who are going to be struggling throughout the magical season that is is Christmas.

Nobody should go without especially children, in years gone by and it'll be exactly the same this year, we've had 400 children plus right from newborns all the way up to 18 year olds that come to the centre for the give-away in the last couple of days before we closed down for Christmas.

And 400 kids is a lot."

To meet this overwhelming need, the centre is asking residents, local groups, and businesses in the community to "stand with us this Christmas" and help them reach their £10,000 target.

Call for New Toys and Financial Donations

The money raised through the appeal will be dedicated to purchasing presents and providing food vouchers for those in need. The distribution of presents is scheduled for the 18th and 19th of December.

James explained that while many businesses are already donating toys directly, specific requirements are in place to ensure the dignity of the recipients:

"We're looking for donations on our GoFundMe page, which will go towards presents that will be handed out on the 18th and 19th of December, and it'll also go towards food vouchers for those that are going to need them as well.

There's a lot of businesses and places that are already donating toys directly to us.

All we ask is that they are new toys because we feel that the children deserve their Christmas. We don't want to be giving them second hand toys."

The centre accepts gifts suitable for children ranging from newborns right up to 18 years of age.

Community Support Begins

The appeal has already seen its first donations arrive. Carol and Christine, volunteers at the centre, have been sorting the initial toys received from Dunelm in Scarborough. Getting support from within the community is described by The Rainbow Centre as vital to providing for those who need it most.

Reflecting on the early response, James Howard commented on the vital role of local support:

"To see the toys starting to arrive at The Rainbow Centre from Dunelm in Scarborough for our Christmas Appeal is fantastic and very humbling.

We are expecting hundreds of families again this Christmas who will need our help, but we cannot do it without our fantastic community, so a big thank you to all those who have already donated."

The Rainbow Centre emphasised that every donation, regardless of its size, helps them continue their mission to bring hope, dignity, and joy to those in need. Donations can be made online at https://justgiving.com/campaign/rainbowxmas or by dropping in directly at The Rainbow Centre.
