Police in Scarborough are taking part a campaign focusing on “Vulnerable Road Users.” this week.
The classification of vulnerable encompasses groups such as pedal cyclists, motorcyclists, older drivers, younger drivers, horse riders and pedestrians.
This year’s campaign is being focused on drivers and riders under the age of 30. There has been a significantly higher proportion of this age group killed or seriously injured this year to date.
Scarborough Police say that this doesn’t mean they we will instantly be pulling all young drivers over, Instead, officers in Scarborough will be visiting colleges to educate young drivers, and their passengers, as to what influences poor driving standards and what can be done to improve them.
Statistics from the RAC have found that around half of young people (aged 17-24) have admitted to using their mobile phone behind the wheel. This is the highest proportion of all age categories.
TC Alison Hoyle of North Yorkshire Police’s Road Safety Team said
“Our focus on young drivers this week is to educate rather than prosecute. New drivers, whether they have the L plates on, or have passed their test, are always learning new skills. We want to help them focus on keeping control and becoming an experienced driver, whilst keeping shiny side up.”
The Roads Safety Team say they will be working with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams from both Scarborough and Eastfield this week to highlight the campaign.
