Staff and volunteers from Scarborough Hospital received major accolades at the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s annual Celebration of Achievement Awards evening, which took place yesterday.
The ceremony, described by the Trust as one of the biggest events in its calendar, is dedicated to honouring staff for the outstanding care they provide daily.
Recognition across multiple categories highlighted the exceptional efforts involved in delivering the new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) in Scarborough, which has been described as the Trust’s largest-ever investment and "biggest capital project ever".
Top Honour for Visionary Leadership

The most prestigious award of the evening, the Chief Executive’s Award, sponsored by Schneider Electrical, was presented to Ed Smith, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Deputy Medical Director.
Mr Smith was selected for his "remarkable work" and the pivotal role he played in making the Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Centre a reality. Throughout the challenging development process, he "demonstrated utmost resilience, kept a calm focus, and never lost sight of what mattered most: improving care for our patients on The East Coast".
The Trust acknowledged that while "every great dream starts with a vision," that specific vision, in this case, was Mr Smith’s. However, those familiar with him note that Mr Smith is a "humble, modest man" who "would be the first to say that this is a team effort," which the Trust affirmed is "absolutely right". The new facility is expected to "make a lasting difference for patients, colleagues, and the community in Scarborough for years to come". The Trust concluded its announcement by asserting, "Ed, you absolutely nailed it".
Clinical Teams Share Top Award

Clinical teams from Scarborough Hospital secured joint victory in the Team of the Year (Clinical) category, proudly sponsored by John Wright Electrical. The award was shared between the Emergency Department (and SDEC) Team and the Enhanced Care Unit Team, both based at Scarborough Hospital.
The Emergency Department Team was recognised for demonstrating "extraordinary strength and unity" during the demanding transition into the new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre. This team successfully supported more than 200 colleagues through induction and managed to build a "safe, inclusive environment under immense pressure".
The second winner, the Enhanced Care Unit Team, was praised for creating a "pioneering model of care that bridges ward and critical care". The Trust noted that this team embraced change with "compassion and collaboration," successfully redefining standards and improving patient outcomes. Both units were lauded as "two remarkable teams with one shared commitment to outstanding care".
Project Manager Named Leader of the Year

Further recognition was extended to Gary Adamson, Digital Project Improvement Manager, who was named Leader of the Year, thanks to sponsor Geoffrey Robinson Ltd.
Mr Adamson was described as "pivotal in delivering the systems behind the new Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Centre". He was commended for being "calm under pressure and deeply people-focused," successfully building confidence, fostering collaboration, and inspiring excellence among his colleagues. The Trust highlighted him as "a true example of compassionate leadership in action".
