The Scarborough Sunflower appeal has renewed its appeal for sponsors to help secure safe places for Ukrainians after a renewed Russian offensive in Ukraine.
A statement from the group says:
'The city of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, located less than 20 miles from the Russian border has been subjected to aerial bombardment since the invasion began over two years ago. However, Russian ground forces have crossed the border in the past week in an attempt to seize the city.
This all comes against the backdrop of further international events that have driven Ukraine out of the headlines.
At the moment there are around 300 Ukrainians living in the Scarborough area, mostly mothers and their children. But with the Ukrainian family scheme ending and the drop in media interest the number of new sponsors coming forward has almost stopped completely.'
Iryna Kutsemakhina, who is living in Scarborough with her two daughters from the city of Dnipro told us:
“If you have a spare room, own property or have a holiday flat, you could become a sponsor. What you’re doing is allowing someone or even a family to leave the war zone and come to a place of safety. You’re allowing a child to have a childhood without sleeping in a basement in fear for their lives.
Most Ukrainians already here have picked up jobs and moved into their own accommodation. But we need sponsors to come forward and enable people to be afforded that place of safety.”
