Just days after opening Scarborough's Community Fridge is having to temporarily curtail it's operations.
The Fridge project aims to provide safe and nutritious food freely available to everyone in the community, including those who are socially and/or economically disadvantaged.
It opened on Saturday after months of planning staffed by volunteers and using food provided through public donations.
In a message on social media on Tuesday the team behind the project announced that the change in the lockdown regulations has forced them to call a temporary halt to the project.
"To all our volunteers, members and supporters,Unfortunately, since the last update and after much consideration, we have had to make the very difficult decision to close Scarborough Community Fridge for the period of lockdown, with immediate effect. We share your disappointment, particularly after such an incredible response to the project, however the safety and welfare of all concerned has to remain our key priority. We would like to take the opportunity to send our most sincere thanks to every single person and organisation who has shown their support and assure you that the decision remains under constant review. We will be contacting each of our supporters, donors and volunteers individually and will keep you all updated through this page.We are still actively seeking volunteers (multiple roles available) and food donors and would like to encourage anybody interested to get in touch. Contact through this page, at scarboroughfridge@gmail.comWe send our best wishes to you all at this difficult time and very much look forward to welcoming you back to Scarborough Community Fridge."
Speaking to This is the Coast in September Jo Claire-Young explained why the Community Fridge is coming to Scarborough:
"More and more, food waste is entering our landfill sites with much of it still being perfectly safe to eat. This problem is of great concern to many of us, so we are hoping to launch an exciting new project here in Scarborough, based at the Street. This is being taken on by members of our own community, to work in partnership with local retailers, with the aim towards reducing the amount of food waste from our town. There are already community fridges in Malton & Pickering which have proven a huge success by redistributing hundreds of tonnes of food.
Our aim is a simple one. Local cafes, deli, shops and supermarkets pass on any unsaleable food, which is past it’s sell by date, but still within its use by date food to our project. This food is made freely available for collection to ANYONE regardless of status or social standing – it is hoped that many residents from Scarborough and the surrounding areas will make use of the donated items. We are looking for people who would like to help us get this worthwhile project of the ground – could this be you?
