Businesses in Scarborough have been meeting today to discuss the opportunities that the marine renewables industry might offer to the town.
Scarborough Business Ambassadors hosted a breakfast meeting in partnership with the Humber Marine and Renewable's team to highlight the potential opportunities to local businesses presented by the construction and operation of large-scale wind farms off the North Yorkshire Coast.
Simon Bull from the Ambassadors thinks the potential for Scarborough is significant.
The development of a huge number of new Wind Farms off the North Yorkshire Coast has never been so intensive and the Business Ambassadors say this brings with it huge opportunities for towns and businesses up and down the coast, including opportunities for the Ports, local businesses, employment and skills as well as hospitality and retail.
The Dogger Bank wind farm project, approximately 50 miles from Scarborough, positions the town as the closest port capable of providing vital support services including crew transfer, engineering support, and other logistical aspects crucial for the wind farm's operation
Chair of the Ambassadors - Simon Bull - says they wanted to bring local firms together to explore the potential.
Today's "Doing Business in the Maritime and Renewable's Sector - Breakfast Meeting" was fully subscribed, highlighting its popularity, brought together local businesses with industry experts, representatives from North Yorkshire Council, and Scarborough Port authorities.
The breakfast meeting serves aimed to:
- Increase awareness among businesses about the wide range of opportunities presented by the offshore wind sector.
- Facilitate a dialogue on the necessary steps to leverage these opportunities, such as potential upgrades to Scarborough Harbour to accommodate the vessels required for offshore wind farm support.
- Address the development of a skilled workforce to meet the sector's demands, both during construction and long-term maintenance.
Organisers say that the event's over-subscription demonstrates the significant local interest in this sector and the commitment of businesses to actively participate in shaping a future where Scarborough plays a key role in the offshore wind industry, not just during the construction phase, but also throughout their operational life.
